Redmi 17 4G vs 5G: what changes beyond the network?

The global Redmi 17 and Redmi 17 5G differ in processor, storage technology and mobile-network support. I'd compare those three things before paying extra for the 5G name. Both list the same battery capacity, charging rating and display size, so the decision needs more than a glance at the biggest numbers on the box.

Start with the complete name

Xiaomi names the 4G model Redmi 17 and the other Redmi 17 5G. This comparison uses their global specifications. They are separate from the Redmi Note family, and local configurations can vary.

I'd ask the seller for the full model, physical RAM and storage capacity in writing. A shortened listing makes it too easy to compare two different configurations as though only the network has changed.

The processor and storage change together

The Redmi 17 uses MediaTek's Helio G91-Ultra and eMMC 5.1 storage. The Redmi 17 5G pairs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 with UFS 2.2 storage. Both list LPDDR4X RAM.

Those are different hardware platforms, even at the same storage capacity. I'd look for testing of the apps and games I actually use before attaching a speed claim to the difference. These specifications aren't a hands-on performance comparison.

For either phone, separate physical RAM from memory extension in shop adverts. Xiaomi's advertised maximum includes storage used as additional memory; it isn't the same as having that amount of physical RAM.

Several headline features are shared

Both global specifications list a 7500mAh typical battery, 45W charging and a 6.9-inch 1600 x 720 display with refresh rates up to 120Hz in supported apps. A 5G label therefore doesn't buy a higher listed charging rate or display resolution here.

Both also list a 50MP main camera and an 8MP front camera, with video up to 1080p at 30fps. Matching headline specifications don't establish equal photo quality or battery life. I'd want comparable testing before making either claim.

Each supports microSD expansion up to 2TB through a hybrid slot. That means choosing between a second SIM and a memory card, rather than fitting all three together. Check that trade-off if you carry two numbers and a large offline media collection.

Make the network difference useful to you

The Redmi 17's listed mobile networks stop at 4G. The Redmi 17 5G adds 5G support, with Xiaomi noting that network access depends on local operators and availability.

I'd check the exact regional handset's supported bands with my operator, then coverage where I spend time and the plan I intend to use. Paying extra for a capability I can't access yet needs a different justification, such as the other hardware differences or a longer ownership plan.

NFC availability is also market-dependent. If contactless payments matter, my Redmi 17 NFC guide explains the separate phone, country and bank-card checks for the 4G model.

How I would choose at the shop

I'd put the two local offers beside each other with the same physical RAM and storage capacity, then compare warranty support and the complete checkout price. The global pages say a power adapter isn't included, so ask what the local package contains before budgeting for accessories.

If the 4G offer is meaningfully cheaper and meets my needs, the shared display and battery specifications give it a fair place on the shortlist. If I can use 5G, I'd weigh the extra network capability alongside the different processor and storage. Without verified local prices or performance tests, I wouldn't name a universal winner.
